Your Nose Knows When Something’s Not Right: Recurring Sinus Infections

There’s pressure around your eyes, a headache creeping into your forehead, stuffiness driving back through your nose, and you can’t seem to stop reaching for the tissues.

Woeful is the day your sinus infection returns — again. And you might be wondering: Why and how does it keep coming back?

While the answer could be pollen, be wary that it might also be mold.

Can Pollen Allergies Cause Recurring Sinus Infections?

Pollen, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. And if not managed properly, allergies can cause recurring swelling and inflammation within the nasal cavity — otherwise referred to as sinusitis or sinus infections.

That’s why it’s so important to monitor your home’s indoor air quality and try to ensure you don’t have allergens following you inside at the end of the day.

For instance, be sure to invest in regular duct cleanings to make sure your HVAC system isn’t diffusing pollutants further. You could try investing in HEPA filter during the fall months when ragweed is abundant, as well as hire somebody to clean your carpet to reduce the number of particles that may be trapped within the fibers, as they become resuspended in their air as you walk around.

If It’s Not My Pollen Allergies, Is It Mold?

If you have no prior history of allergies, or if you already have an allergy regimen you know to be effective, then the cause of your recurring sinus infections may not be allergies, but mold.

“People who have nasal allergies already have this sinus irritation,” according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and, Immunology (ACAAI). “If you have a weak immune system, you are more likely to develop sinus infection from bacteria or mold.”
