Looking Up This Storm Season: Preventing Roof Damage

The peaceful lull between annual hurricane seasons is, unfortunately, coming to its close in a matter of a few short months.

And as you begin to stock back up on canned goods, bottled water, and flashlight batteries, don’t forget to include your residential and commercial property in the process of your hurricane prep.

After all, roof damage can do far more than cost you a pretty penny at the end of the day, and that’s why we’re here today to help give you some tips on how to mitigate it from occurring!

The Impact of Roof Damage

Should your roof take damage, you’ll likely be impacted in two interconnected ways: flooding and mold growth. In fact, “about 25% of all flood claims come from moderate- to low-risk areas, which means you don’t have to live in a high-risk zone to be affected,” according to Florida Flood Insurance.

And as if flooding of your property weren’t bad enough unto itself — what with structural erosion, furniture damage, and more — the contaminants it brings into your home may worsen the overall situation long-term.

Not only can varieties of post-storm water drag in all manner of debris and biological contamination but, once the waters have receded, the residual moisture is liable to cause mold growth all throughout your home or business.

Of course, even if your property doesn’t flood, the moisture intrusion that occurs as a result of roof damage is still apt to cause mold growth in dark, hidden crevices around your attic space or walls.

Roof Protection 101

Protecting your roof in the midst of storm season doesn’t have to be a large or costly ordeal. Primarily it requires home maintenance, ensuring that the existing structures are up to par. Additionally, performing this routine work will give you an idea if anything else needs to be fortified further before the season arrives in full-force.

For example, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends that property owners trim their trees prior to a storm’s arrival. Otherwise, high winds and heavy debris may cause the trees to topple, effectively crashing through your roof and into your house.

Next, be sure to assess your attic for existing leaks, cracks, or other signs of water damage, as these spots will all indicate where there may be punctures or fallen shingles in need of fixing on or beneath the roof.

Finally, don’t forget to clear and clean your gutters. These rooftop structures are specifically designed to drain water down and away from your home; thus, if they become clogged, the water may back up, seep into your roof, and/or cause the nearby wooden structures to rot.
